The Pastoral Ministry
The Dignity of the Ministry
Sample Chapter
Many people have a low view of the ministry. But Scripture tells us that laypeople should reverence pastors, since we are Christ’s under shepherds.
The writer to the book of Hebrews says: “Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct” (Hebrews 13:7). This may refer not only to today’s godly leaders but also to those who have gone on to glory. Our former pastors made a spiritual impact on our lives, and we should imitate their faith and conduct. Although they are dead, they continue to speak to us.
Hebrews also says: “Obey those who rule over you, and be submissive, for they watch out for your souls, as those who must give account. Let them do so with joy and not with grief, for that would be unprofitable for you” (Hebrews 13:17).
Former leaders are to be imitated; present leaders are to be obeyed. As pastors, our shepherding responsibilities should command the obedience of our laypeople. They should recognize who pastors are in God’s sight and appreciate the grandeur of the ministry entrusted to us.
The dignity of our ministry may be depicted in five different areas: its divine origin, its glory, its greatness, and its purposes.
